Workshop Series

Stroll for Well-Being: Garden Walks at The Morikami
Cost: $95 (includes one year Individual membership; members: $40.00)
Time: 10:30am - 12:00pm (three meetings only)
Location: Main Museum and Gardens


 

 Participants will visit the Morikami Gardens for quiet contemplation as often as they wish over a 3-month period. A specially developed Journal, designed to enhance the experience, will be used as a guide and a means to record personal thoughts through the 12 themed garden strolls. There will be three meetings with the Journal's author, Associate Professor at the Christine E Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University. An explanation about the program will be provided during the first meeting; the second one, which will take place half-way through the program, will be used to answer any questions that may appear during the first few walks. Finally, last meeting will take place at the end of the program and will include a discussion of participants' experiences.

Tea Ceremony Workshop
Cost: $35

The workshop will teach the basics of Sado - Tea Ceremony - necessary to know in order to learn more about the aesthetics of Sado or to better understand and fully enjoy the tea ceremony itself. Participants will become familiar with how to be a guest should one be invited to a Tea Ceremony and how to make a bowl of tea and serve it to a guest.
The workshop is a prerequisite for those who have never taken a tea ceremony class but wish to start studying Sado.

 Learn Taiko

The Way of Taiko - The Heartbeat of Japan 
Taiko Drum Workshop
Cost: $50
Location: Morikami Theater





The workshop will include an introduction to the history of taiko. Participants will be taught how to understand sounds and movements, i.e., how to connect nature and the meaning of body movement. They will become familiar with the way of taiko and learn how to drum Top performers from South Florida's Fushu Daiko will conduct the workshop. The group is recognized by Seiichi Tanaka, the master of San Francisco Taiko Dojo, who brought taiko to the United States and who trained senior member of the Fushu Daiko group.
  Wear comfortable clothes and shoes; jewelry not recommended.

Basics of Sushi Workshop
Cost: $65
Time: 1:00pm-3:00pm
Location: Oki Education Studio
Instructor: Mitsutoshi Sekita
Materials: participants must bring a sharp 7 - 8 inch knife, cutting board (approximately 10” x 15”), apron and dishtowel.



Sushi has entered the American palette as a cultural influence from Japan. Few know that sushi is not actually raw fish, but rice made with a bit of vinegar and sugar. Served with a variety of accompaniments and either cooked or raw fish and vegetables, it can take many forms.  Participants in this hands-on workshop, led by Mitsutoshi Sekita, a sushi chef from a Japanese restaurant in Plantation, Florida, will learn the basics of sushi making, cultural information about sushi and of course, will enjoy their creations.

, The Gardens of the Drops of Dew, The Morikami's beautiful Japanese Gardens, is the setting for this three-day photography workshop with professional photographer Richard Redding. Students will receive a critique of their work at the end of the workshop

Japanese Garden Design 101 Workshop
Cost: $50
Time: 10:00am-12:00pm and 1:30pm-3:30pm
Location: Oki Education Studio
Materials: Provide dimensions of your front or backyard, two triangles - 45 and 60 degree, and a 12" architect's triangular scale available at office supply and arts and crafts stores.

 

Master designer Hoichi Kurisu, the builder of The Morikami's Roji-en, will provide instructions for beginners who are interested in the basics of Japanese garden design. Participants will learn fundamental differences in thinking between the Japanese and Western cultures.  Using slides and sketches, Mr. Kurisu will discuss the Japanese concept of space and the significance of odd numbers in Japanese gardens and culture. Students will practice basic garden design by sketching.

Demonstrations of Koto: The Way of Koto *NEW

Koto is a traditional Japanese stringed instrument first introduced to Japan from China. Learn the fascinating history of this exquisite instrument and listen to its captivating and tranquil sounds demonstrated by koto teacher Mrs. Yoshiko Carlton. Be introduced to the basics of how this instrument is played and receive a koto music sheet of the most famous Japanese song Sakura, "Cherry Blossom."

Fun with Japanese Writing I and II Workshop *NEW
2-day workshop

This workshop concentrates on the written form of the Japanese language. Fun with Japanese Writing I, covers reading and writing of the two Japanese alphabets, hiragana and katakana. Fun with Japanese Writing II, focuses on reading and writing of kanji (Chinese characters) used in Japan. Students will learn the writing form and stroke order through practice, classroom exercises, and fun interactive activities.
